HAKUOUKI SSL (Sweet School Life)
A high school AU of Hakuouki ~Shinsengumi Kitan~. You can watch the animated, unvoiced shorts here and here. All other info is derived from the Otomate staff blog.
Chizuru Yukimura is the only female student at an all boys' high school, Haku Academy. She attends with her childhood friend, Heisuke Toudou, and irritable twin brother Kaoru Nagumo. Along the way she interacts with a number of colorful characters: Souji Okita, a playful second year; Hajime Saitou, a second year dedicated to his position on the disciplinary committee; vice principal Toshizou Hijikata; principal Isami Kondou; fun-loving teachers Sanosuke Harada and Shinpachi Nagakura; the unsettling school nurse Keisuke Sannan and his assistant, Susumu Yamazaki; and the exasperating student council, Chikage Kazama and his lackeys, Kyuju Amagiri and Kyou Shiranui. Basically, this shit is anime as hell.
Heisuke is a second year and Chizuru's friend from childhood (presumably her neighbor too, since they are seen going to school together).
HEADCANON
aka crap i've made up based on OU stuff
FAMILY: Like his OU counterpart, Heisuke is a bastard child, born of an affair his father had with another woman not long after he married his wife. Because his father holds a rather distinguished position in his company, it would have looked bad if anyone discovered he had a son out of wedlock, and so Heisuke has never met or had any contact with his biological mother and has to pretend his stepmom is his birth mom. His stepmother dislikes him for being living evidence that her husband cheated on him, and while she has long since forgiven her husband's straying, she hasn't forgotten, and can't quite forgive Heisuke for existing. Unlike his OU counterpart, they all live together and purport an image of a model family life in the presence of others, but he mostly avoids his parents at home, and they avoid him. His father does feel somewhat guilty about how things have turned out for Heisuke, though he doesn't know how to address it, so Heisuke gets a hefty allowance in exchange for not asking questions about his biological mother and putting up with the whole charade. Heisuke calls it "hush money" and believes his dad only gives him the money as an excuse to not spend time with him and as a bribe to keep the important people from finding out he's an illegitimate son. In reality, the reasoning is a mix of both. His home life, as a whole, is tense and distant, and he gets nervous about having friends over despite having a nice house and a rich kid's bedroom, to put it bluntly. Chizuru is the exception and probably the only friend he has that he would trust with the truth of the situation.
CHIZURU: He's been Chizuru's friend since childhood and they often played together as kids, ever since he moved into her neighborhood. They walk to and from school together. (Sometimes this means that both of them are late because Heisuke sleeps too late or can't put down video games long enough to get up and go.) He has a crush on her but he's only acutely aware of it and won't admit it outright—though to everyone else, it's fairly obvious. Since she's a first year, he sees it as his duty as a friend and a senpai to look after her in her unique situation, and becomes quietly grumpy when the other boys pay her special attention. Most of all, though, he just wants her to be happy at school and otherwise.
HOBBIES: Because his father gives him a heftier allowance than most kids his age, he doesn't see the need to get a part-time job like some of his peers, and isn't dedicated enough to bother with cram school. He likes video games, music, manga, and typical stuff like that—but especially video games. His favorite games are RPGs but he'll play just about anything. He has a tendency to become engrossed in whatever he's doing for hours at a time when it's something he's doing at home because it means there's less of a chance to interact with his family. (Like his OU counterpart liked to deal with sadness with alcohol, he's a bit of an escapist.) He has a bicycle, but he doesn't ride it to school because then he wouldn't be able to walk next to Chizuru.
SCHOOL: He's (fairly) bright but has the typical problem of not applying himself. He's a bit of a class clown, especially in math and gym class because Harada-sensei and Nagakura-sensei let him get away with it... most of the time. Unfortunately, he doesn't have any idea what he wants to do with his life after graduation and gets a bit peeved when he's asked about it or dragged to counseling. One day he'll have it all figured out, and the next day he'll have changed his mind again. It's gotten kind of old, to the point where he prefers not to think about it at all. He gets decent, average grades and tends to slack on homework but do okay on tests. His favorite subject is English but his favorite class is math because Nagakura-sensei teaches it. Heisuke is often scolded by Hijikata for goofing off and not working harder—because he knows Heisuke could do better than he does if he would focus. Okita has been trying to get him to come to kendo club since music club with Itou-sensei turned out to be a drag. (He tried playing trumpet in his first year and ended up quitting at the end of the year, cementing his new place in the Go Home Club.)
FRIENDS: He can get along with (almost) anyone because he's easygoing and cheerful despite a somewhat fiery attitude. He is friendly with his classmates in his year, Okita, Saitou, and Yamazaki, but actively dislikes the student council and Kazama in particular. He wants to protect Chizuru from him because he's a creepo. He also thinks Kaoru is kind of a turd who needs to mind his own business! But they probably get along okay when Chizuru and school rules aren't the topic at hand... "okay" being "not actively yelling". Most of his classmates think he is funny since he's a bit of a class clown and butt monkey, which makes him ultimately well-liked despite the occasional friendly teasing—though sometimes it goes a little too far when classmates prod him about coming from a well-to-do family.

TIDBITS:
- While his family life is sort of a bummer and he wishes it were different, the money is a fair enough bribe and it's been long enough that he realizes it's probably never going to get any better and he needs to put up with it until he's paid through university and they inevitably cut him off. Because of his cheerful and carefree demeanor most people assume he's a little spoiled since he doesn't have to get a job to support his hobbies, and he doesn't correct them on this. If he's asked invasive questions about his home life, he waves it off and nervously changes the subject. It hasn't traumatized him or anything, it's just not something he wants to (or even can) discuss.
- I've yet to come up with a reason why he's named the way he is. Maybe his father is secretly a Shinsengumi fanboy??? Descended from the real Heisuke Toudou/Tsu domain lineage? idk
- The only real meaningful gift he's inherited from his father is a family heirloom—Kazusanosuke Kaneshige, a wakizashi forged in the Edo period and said to have been wielded by a famous warrior. He has it mounted on his wall and knows it's special but he doesn't really understand just how special and how much money it would fetch on a collectibles market.
- He likes festivals. Whenever they come around he tends to blow a lot of his allowance on food and games—he's the type who would take a girl and spend tons of yen trying to win her a big plush from one of the festival games. He looks forward to being old enough to drink at festivals too.
